Spoofing himself in 'J.C.V.D' has action star rethinking how he chooses roles.

Shed a tear if you're feeling charitable for Jean-Claude Van Damme. Sure, the one-time nearly A-list action star (perhaps my odd admiration for "Timecop" and "Hard Target" is showing here?) admits he's made a fortune in the last decade thanks to straight-to-DVD movies with titles like "In Hell" and "Until Death," but he's not very proud of any of it.

When MTV caught up with Van Damme to discuss his latest flicks, "J.C.V.D" and "The Shepherd: Border Patrol," he was in an introspective mood, admitting he's only ever made a couple of decent films and wondering if a career resurrection is in the cards at the ancient action-star age of 47.

MTV: There were reports that Brett Ratner wanted you for "Rush Hour 3." Was that true?

Van Damme: Yeah, I was approached. "Rush Hour," even though I would have been well paid, would have been difficult for me to accept.

MTV: They're also making a new "Street Fighter" film. How does that make you feel?

Van Damme: In fact they called me for that movie, to do the sequel. Again, I would have been well paid but I didn't want to do it. I've made enough money. I don't want to make a movie and then come home and be unhappy about it.

Anyway, in the course of our chat, Van Damme revealed that he and Seagal nearly came to blows on the screen way back when in a little film called “Demolition Man!” Here’s what he told me: “Years ago it was proposed that I would do a film with Steven Seagal. I was supposed to be in ‘Demolition Man’ with him. It was a great project. The script I read was a lot different than the one Sly did with Wesley Snipes. I was the bad guy. He was the good guy because he was the Warner Bros guy.”

Ok, the monster is huge. Though, we never get a real good look at it while it's terrorizing the city. A couple of glimpses, some out-of-focus blips, a leg here, and a tail there is about all we get. And that adds to the film's suspense and stirs our imagination. What sets the film apart is that the monster is just a backdrop. The main focus centers on how a small group of people cope and react under such an extreme crisis. Where the monster came from is never explained, nor do we find out whether or not it was destroyed. For that matter, the fate of New York City is also unclear. What is clear, though, is that 'Cloverfield' is a thrill ride that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the end credits roll. The movie runs just under 90 minutes, any longer would be seizure inducing. 4 Stars

After 'Superbad' and 'Knocked Up', Judd Apatow has now pulled off the movie equivalent of the Triple Crown. John C. Reilly, already a Best Actor Golden Globe nominee for this, is fantastic as a backwoods singer who rises to fame in the '60s and '70s, becoming a legend in the process, sleeping with hundreds of women, marrying a few, fathering boatloads of kids, and living the glory and hard life of a superstar. With over 30 very clever, somewhat raunchy songs to perform, Reilly proves he is not only a gifted comic but a really good singer as well. Apatow, Reilly and Co. will have you laughing from start to finish. 4 Stars.

Vince Vaughn and Director David Dobkin ("Wedding Crashers") reunite to bring movie audiences "Fred Claus" just in time for the holidays. Certainly this is not a perfect film. There a few too many
slow moments, some annoying CGI and not a whole lot of laughs. Still, it's hard to hate a Christmas movie that allows Frank Stallone, Stephen Baldwin, and Roger Clinton rip on their far more famous siblings, and there is a wonderful montage toward the end that effortlessly captures the reasons for the season. "Fred" has a nice mix of humor and heart and will most likely be a staple Christmas
flick for years to come. Vince Vaughn saves Christmas. 3 Stars

MOVIE REVIEW: The Heartbreak Kid

"The Heartbreak Kid" is a gross-out comedy with a couple of big laughs. When faced with the frightening possibility that he'll never find true love, Eddie (Ben Stiller) marries the next woman who falls for him. It isn't until they're on their way to their honeymoon that he realizes he may have made a huge mistake. After a promising first half, the film just falls flat. The Farrelly's effort has been surpassed by Judd Apatow and Co. and is nowhere as good as it could have been. However, the movie's too few moments between Ben and his real life dad Jerry Stiller are so hilarious, it's hard not to wonder how much funnier the movie might have been had it centered on their relationship. Rating 2 1/2 Stars.

Like the previous coming-of-age classic ‘American Graffiti’, this film is smart, has depth and takes place during one unforgettable night. ‘Superbad’ is this generations ‘Fast Times’ and/or ‘Dazed And Confused’, and easily surpasses every other teen-sex comedy we’ve had since. American What? Can’t Hardly What? Please, those films don’t hold a candle to this. Just the byplay between the cops and McLovin (Seth Rogen, SNL’s Bill Hader and newcomer Christopher Mintz-Plasse shine) is worth the price of admission. Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen can do no wrong. ‘Superbad’ is an instant classic.

Disney is renaming the Disney-MGM Theme Park in Orlando to Disney’s Hollywood Studio. But the park will not just be renamed, but restructured into different lands (almost like how Universal handles Islands of Adventure). According to Jim Hill, there are plans to increase George Lucas’ presence in Disney’s Hollywood Studios into an entire George Lucas Land that will stretch from the Indiana Jones Outpost to the Tatooine Traders.

‘Rush Hour 3’ is nowhere near as enjoyable as the previous two. The formula lacks freshness. Chan has aged. Tucker isn’t as funny. But the likeable chemistry of Chan and Tucker is what works. Chan can still execute the physically demanding stunt sequences. Tucker’s quips are still quite brash and inventive. ‘Rush Hour 3’ is nothing new but it does the job. Highlights include the beautiful and mysterious Noémie Lenoir, the grand finale action scene atop the Eiffel Tower, and the mandatory outtakes during the closing credits. Audiences may not “rush” to the theater, but if they do, they won’t be disappointed. 3 Stars.

MOVIE REVIEW: The Bourne Ultimatum

The third Bourne rocks, rattles and rolls during its entire two hour running time. A terrific serious action film charged with the adrenaline pumping direction of Paul Greengrass (coming off his Oscar nomination for "United 93"). While it’s not superior to its predecessors (the first one directed by Doug Liman was the best), Matt Damon continues to be perfect as Jason Bourne. Highlights include impressive chase scenes (Bourne can basically ride a motorcycle in and out of just about anywhere), the best hand to hand fight sequence we’ve seen yet in a Bourne movie, and some awesome locations from Moscow to Tangier. 3 1/2 Stars.

Sandler and Co. shine in this sidesplitting comedy with heart. Director Dennis Dugan (“Happy Gilmore”) understands the Sandler formula to a tee. “Sideways” writers Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor have helped to perfect the formula. Unlike other Sandler films (with the exception of “Punch Drunk Love” and “Reign Over Me”) this one drifts into something that’s far more character driven and richer with story developments and subplots. Sandler himself delivers as leading man with honest emotions and genuine likeability. Kevin James proves he can hold his own and Nick Swardson is back stealing scenes like he did in “Blades of Glory” earlier this year. I now pronounce this one of the summer’s best movies. 4 Stars.
Sure, Jessica Biel may not be the most convincing attorney but it's a pleasure to know she is willing to disrobe for the sake of comedy.

David Duchovny says X-Files Sequel Moving Forward

The current plan is to start shooting in November 2007 for a Summer 2008 release. Duchovny said that it was indeed going forward, and added that "Gillian [Anderson] is onboard." The first movie opened with $30 Million in the summer of 1998 and went on to make $200 Million Worldwide. The sequel will be a stand-alone film and not follow the aliens mythology story arc.

I do not consider myself a fan. I’ve only read half of the first book. I’ve only seen the fourth film in its entirety (the previous three films couldn’t keep my attention). Though, I thoroughly enjoyed this most recent installment. It's action-packed, darker, more epic and thankfully schmaltz-free. Easily the best "Harry Potter" film. Harry's nemesis, the evil Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) is the highlight of the film. First time “Potter” director David Yates delivers an action-filled climactic battle that even non-Potter fans will enjoy. I’ll be in line opening weekend for the next one. 3 1/2 Stars. As a child of the 80s, I’ve been anticipating this film for the nostalgia I have towards the series and the toys. Now that I’ve seen it, I can’t say that my dreams came true with a computer generated Optimus Prime. Don’t get me wrong, I liked it. I might have even loved it on some level. “Transformers” will appeal to audiences the same way “Jurassic Park” did. No one is seeing this for the plot, characters or dialogue. People will see this because huge robots blow things up (and believe me director Michael Bay delivers huge on that). Go enjoy “Transformers” on the big screen but don’t expect anything more than a big summer action movie. 3 1/2 Stars.

Move over Captain Jack Sparrow! The fourth "Die Hard" film, the first in a dozen years, is the best in the series, and Willis, still as tough and wise cracking as ever, comfortably slips back into the John McClane role (Just like Arnie in "T3" and Sly in "Rocky Balboa"). The action is huge and non-stop. The supporting cast is palpable (kudos to kung-fu babe Maggie Q), but don't get me wrong, this is Bruce Willis's movie all the way. I'll never forget the feeling I had walking out of the theater after seeing "Terminator 2." I had a similiar feeling after seeing this. Old-school, bare-knuckle action, McClane delivers and then some. Yippee ki yay! 4 1/2 Stars.

Steve Carell is a natural leading man. The gift of his performance is that he sells the idea that his character is capable of limitless building capability and is genuinely fearful of God’s wrath. Just as in TV’s “The Office”, his comedic timing is terrific here too. Morgan Freeman displays the patient, loving wisdom of God with dignity and authority. No spoilers here but the finale was quite realistic and amazing to watch. “Evan Almighty” isn’t as laugh out loud funny as “Bruce Almighty”, but there is plenty of humor, action and suspense to make for a family friendly, crowd pleasing comedy with a good message which is sure to entertain viewers of all ages. 3 1/2 Stars.

“FF:ROTSS” is exactly what a superhero movie should be: entertaining, family-friendly popcorn flick with even doses of humor, heroism and heart. This film is more enjoyable than the last, especially since the origin story (who the characters are and how they got their powers) was already told in the first Fantastic Four film. So this time around, director Tim Story gets to spotlight the characters' diverse powers. And the visual effects team does an amazing job bringing those powers to the screen. Everything about this superhero sequel surpasses the original by a long shot. Prepare for fantastic special effects and comic book action. 3 1/2 Stars.

Hilarious, heartwarming and an absolute delight from beginning to end. Written by director Judd Apatow ("The 40 Year Old Virgin"), "Knocked Up" is one hilarious moment on top of another as it follows two very different people on what could be considered an emotional roller coaster. Seth Rogen emerges here as a comic force to be reckoned with. Easily the best film of the summer. 4 1/2 Stars.

Slickly shot, coolly edited, oozing dark, deadpan humor, 'Mr. Brooks' finds Costner at the top of his game. His moves are subtle, his expressions flat, his emotions clamped down, contained. William Hurt's great as the sinister sidekick, and Demi Moore, though she never appears face to face with Costner, makes her presence known: sharp, assertive, sexy in that no-nonsense Demi-esque way. Dane Cook is awesome in a role that isn't funny, but does a funny thing to the movie: It makes Costner's Earl Brooks, a guy who gets off on offing people, sympathetic. 3 Stars.

Clooney and friends are back for another heist romp that's the most refreshing of the series. After the fragmented incoherence of part 2, this film returns to a more straightforward narrative, which lets us get much more involved with the story. It's thoroughly entertaining to watch these guys have fun, plot and then execute their elaborate sting. Director Steven Soderbergh assembles the film with groovy editing, a smooth soundtrack and some astonishingly seamless digital effects. But it's all about the simple joy of the scam, the camaraderie of the characters and the satisfaction of seeing a true baddie get his in the end. In this summer of trilogies, “13” is a lucky number. 3 Stars
FYI: "13" marks the 6th film Clooney and Dir. Steven Soderbergh have done together. Of the 6 films, "13" is their 2nd best effort. 1998's "Out Of Sight" remains both Clooney's and Soderbergh's best film to date.

I may have to call in sick for the remainder of the week. My second-favorite show ever, Veronica Mars (number one is Magnum, p.i.), has apparently met a premature end, as I feared. The CW was trying to sell the show to the wrong audience. They were asking teenyboppers to tune in when there were plenty of adults out there who would’ve loved the series had they realized what it had to offer.

On their way to the battlefields of Iraq, led by their bellowing commanding officer (Keith David), the trio fall asleep on the plane, accidentally jettison themselves, and wake up in the middle of a desert ... in Mexico. Stuck in a small village, the modern day three stooges need to muster up their courage to confront a group of Mexican outlaws, led by Carlos Santana (Danny Trejo). The soundtrack prominently features ‘East Bound And Down’ by Jerry Reed from the ‘Smokey and the Bandit’ soundtrack. Larry fans will be very happy.

Summer movie season is here and begins with the ultimate summer movie! ‘Spiderman 3’ bursts with action, plotlines, characters, humor, energy and spectacle! The movie swings breathlessly and without warning from one scene to another, from breakneck excitement to outrageous silliness to comic-book morals about responsibility, sacrifice and now even vengeance and forgiveness. This may be the freshest and most unique of the three films, completing the trilogy without a hint of franchise fatigue. Tobey Maguire, the special effects (Sandman may be the best effect the series has achieved) and Topher Grace as Venom are the highlights of the film. The best of the series. 4 Stars

Soon, he's reconnecting with his parents, his friends and former dancing compatriots, and the girl he had a crush on, Jen (the beautiful Maria Menounos). Jen, unfortunately, is engaged to Justin's junior high nemesis, Kip. With a “kickin” 80’s soundtrack, underdog triumph and several doses of charm and heart, I couldn’t help but smile from beginning to end. Think Rip Van Winkle meets 'Big'. 3 Stars

'UNTIL DEATH' was yet another firm step in the right direction for Jean Claude to prove he can act. He put out a fearless and layered performance that had me transfixed to the screen. Jean Claude's performance is the only reason to see this movie. As the "anti-hero", Jean Claude bravely plays a senselessly violent drug addict to a T. His range as a performer has definitely expanded since we last saw him and he effortlessly made his co-stars look like bottom of the barrel amateurs. This is the kind of Van Damme talent that should be showcased in a big budget return to the big screen! Although the film was involving enough throughout and some of the visuals delivered, the mild action scenes (no splits or helicopter kicks), the so-so acting by the supporting cast and the shoddily executed narrative dragged the picture down. A perfect case of Van Damme being too good for the mediocre film he’s in. 2 Stars

“Vacancy” offers a motel, on the backroads off the interstate, where the five dollar extra honeymoon suite, compliments of the creepy manager, comes with all sorts of amenities. There’s the cockroaches, the absence of cable TV, and the handy minute by minute wake up service of people pounding on your door trying to kill you. “Vacancy” features solid acting (kudos to Luke Wilson in this role), some genuine “edge of your seat” moments, but too many missed opportunities to be a first rate thriller. The film is modest, the plot is simple, but altogether not very imaginative. I just hope our hero’s received a triple a discount. 2 1/2 Stars

Many critics have labeled “Disturbia” as a modern day “Rear Window.” In truth, the youth market this film is aimed at probably doesn’t know or care about Hitchcock. “Disturbia” is a pretty well-acted, albeit teenage thriller, that takes advantage of cell phones, web cams and modern technology's increasing potential for making us all avid voyeurs. Shia LaBoefu carries the film, but I’m not convinced he is the next big thing. The first half is very John Hughes, more “Home Alone” than “Breakfast Club.” Director DJ Caruso cranks up the horror level in the second half just enough for the skittish to turn their heads. 2 1/2 Stars

"Grindhouse" transports you to another place and time. Much of the allure comes from the details, the filler, the scratched-up promos with their dated graphics and crackly sound. Terrific ensemble, all-star cast includes Michael Biehn (great to see him on the big-screen again), Jeff Fahey (stealing every scene he’s in), and Kurt Russell. Highlights of the film include Rodriquez’s nieces as the Crazy Babysitter Twins and the fake trailers directed by Eli Roth and Rob Zombie. "Grindhouse" represents the strength of Rodriguez and Tarantino’s combined talent and abilities. I’m just glad I survived it. 2 1/2 Stars

"The Cutting Edge" meets "Talladega Nights" in this laugh-a-minute, crowd pleasing sports comedy. Nobody plays the abrasive, manly man better than Will Ferrell. Jon Heder makes for a palpable sidekick (my wife says he's still Napoleon with different hair) but make no mistake about it, this is Will Ferrell's movie. He steals every scene he's in. Supporting cast also includes Jenna Fischer, from TV's "The Office" (she looks even prettier on the big screen), comedian Nick Swardson and a handful of professional ice skaters including Nancy Kerrigan and the stunning Sasha Cohen (who receives the honor of catching Will Ferrell's jock strap in the face). One of the funniest films of the year. 3 1/2 Stars.
